New York Café

Allow me to introduce myself, a critic who delves into the dark, but all the more exciting, depths of Budapest’s nightlife. Today I’m looking at the gleaming facade of the New York Café, whose fame has travelled far and wide.

Stepping through the entrance, we enter a world of opulence and elegance of a bygone era. The high ceilings, the glittering chandeliers, the ornate stuccoes all evoke a bygone but glittering era. The view is stunning, no doubt. But behind the surface glamour, it’s worth digging deeper.

The atmosphere of the café is both attractive and a little overwhelming. The throngs of tourists who arrive in the name of the place sometimes lose its intimacy. The noisy bustle can deprive the visitor of the opportunity to truly immerse themselves in the charm of the place.

As for the offerings, the selection of coffees and pastries is rich and the quality is reasonable. However, the prices are high, in keeping with the historical importance of the place and the decor, which makes one wonder. Is it the taste of the coffee or the texture of the cake that justifies this particular surcharge?

The staff are polite, but can sometimes seem a little tired due to the heavy traffic. The speed of service can be erratic, which is not necessarily desirable in a place with such a reputation.

Allow me to delve a little deeper into the world of New York Café and further explore the aforementioned aspects.

As you approach the café, you can see the imposing façade of the huge building, which exudes the elegance of past centuries. However, outside the entrance you are greeted by a phenomenon that immediately makes you wonder: the queue. Tourists, who come from all over the world to enjoy the reputation of the place, queue patiently, waiting to get in. This crowd is telling in itself: the popularity of the place is undeniable, but the experience of queuing is questionable. For a place that could offer the intimacy of a café and quiet contemplation, the crowds make it seem more like a bustling tourist attraction.

Once inside, the interior is truly stunning. The high ceilings, richly decorated walls and glittering chandeliers all evoke an atmosphere of opulence and grandeur. It’s a truly immersive experience, a journey back in time. But the contemplation is soon replaced by reality: the prices.

New York Café’s prices are not tailored to the average Hungarian’s wallet. The price of a simple coffee or a slice of cake is significantly higher than what you would expect to pay in an average Budapest café. This high price does not necessarily reflect the quality of the products, but rather the historical importance of the place, its location and its reputation. For a tourist who visits once in a while, this may be within the budget, but for a local who wants to enjoy a nice coffee on a regular basis, this place may be out of reach.

Otherwise, the quality of the offer is not outstanding compared to the high prices. The coffees and pastries are average and do not offer a culinary experience that justifies the high price. You pay more for the atmosphere and the view, not necessarily for the unique flavours.

The staff try to cope with the high traffic, but the constant hustle and bustle and the large number of guests can make service impersonal and attention to individual needs is not always given.

All in all, New York Café is a place that is definitely worth a visit if you are in Budapest. The stunning interior and historic atmosphere make it a truly unique experience. However, the long lines, high prices and sometimes impersonal service overshadow the glamour. It is worth considering whether you are willing to pay the high price and accept the crowds of tourists in exchange for the spectacle. Those looking for a real coffee experience or a quiet, intimate moment might want to look for other, less glamorous but equally quality places in the city where they can save money.
